  2. Great restaurant
My husband and I are from California and we visited friends in Houston during the holidays. They took us to this fabulous restaurant! We are retired and travel quite a bit and we were very impressed with the food and service. The steaks were absolutely some of the best we have ever had, extremely tender and juicy. Everything we had from our salads to dessert was excellent. It was a lovely way to celebrate the holidays with friends. We loved the ambiance of this restaurant and we will definitely return the next time we are in town. (MEDavis, 01/01/2009)

  3. Wonderful!
We have eaten at the DRC for many years and have never had a bad meal or poor service. I just don' t get the bad reviews. Every single brunch, lunch or dinner we have ever had has been excellent. We especially enjoy Sunday evenings on the patio, listening to the live jazz. Give this wonderful restaurant a try, you'll love it! (dyrjnn, 12/19/2008)

  4. What a find
My husband and I recently were driving up the down the streets in the River Oaks area to look at all the Holiday lights. When we stumbled across this little cafe for dinner. When we first walked in, we noticed the lovely holiday decorations that seems to give this restaurant a warm and cozy feel to it. Which we like very much.We were greeted by the friendly staff and seated right away. Amazingly, since it was crowded. After looking at the delicious menu it was time to make up our minds. I started with the baked goat cheese salad. A little bigger than I expected, but so tasty I ate the whole thing. The combination of the grilled apples, spiced pecans and an entire bulb of roasted garlic made this salad my new favorite. My husband had the tortilla crusted shrimp. YUM!! Crisp shrimp, savory sauce. What else could you ask for. Our waiter suggested a great bottle of wine to go with our entrees. He seemed knowledgable enough so we went with it. I had the Beef tenderloin. It was great, tender, and very tasty. My husband had the Lamb chops. They were cooked to perfection. I believe they were marinaded in honey and cumin so when grilled, the honey kind of caramelized which made for a burst of flavor in each bite. The pumpkin creme brulee was to die for. This little cafe is a treat to find. The food was great. Service very good and the atmosphere cozy and quaint. I will difinately recommend this restaurant to all my friends. Cant wait to go back! 5. Raw Shrimp on the French Toast?? Gross!!
I went here with a couple of friends for Sunday brunch. We didn't have reservations, so we asked to be put on the list. After the host stared at us for what seemed like a few minutes he stuttered that it would be until 1:00 before we could be seated (Keep in mind that it is only 10:45am).However, he then quickly changed his mind and said a table would be opening up shortly if we wanted to wait at the bar. As we were about to walk up to the bar a member of the waitstaff walked up to the people who had walked in after us (also without reservations) and offered the same table to them while we were still standing there. The girl behind us had to tell him "Actually they were here before us." To which he just walked off with no response. So we were seated after about 5 minutes (so much for 1:00).The waiter finally came over.He was completely inattentive and "out-of-it" throughout the entire meal.He did not know the soup of the day (I was a server, this is an important thing to memorize). They didn't offer any kind of "bottomless" mimosa specials like so many other brunch restaurants and the Mimosa's were small, expensive ($4) and weak. The bloody mary tasted like sucking on the end of a poorly seasoned crawfish (disgusting). When we finally got our food I noticed something shiny on my French Toast.Upon closer inspection I discovered that it was a piece (nickel-sized) of raw shrimp!!Gross! I informed some random guy because I hadn't seen the waiter in quite some time.He didn't say anything just took it back to the kitchen. Finally the waiter came back and I told him about the shrimp expecting some kind of reaction to this horribly gross situation and he just said "Oh".I am horrified, this is a dangerous health code violation.I'm pretty sure all the kitchen did was scrape the shrimp off and cook it a little more because it came back in 3 minutes but now burned on the outside. He then mixed up all our credit cards and charged one of them twice-incompetent.We'll never go back. 6. beautiful garden, average food, terrible service
I love dining outside, and the garden at the DRC is very nice. The service is terrible: we called ahead and made a reservation, but they lost our reservation and we were lucky to get seated. The waiter was friendly, but forgot to bring us water and forgot the dessert menu, so we skipped that. DRC had very few tables outside, and no one was seated inside when we were there, but the wait staff seemed so overwhelmed with the tables outside that they are either really understaffed or incompetent. The food is nothing memorable, just average, so in my opinion overpriced for what you get. I ordered the scallop entree ($28.50): the scallops and grilled polenta were ok, but I only got 5 or six small scallops for $28.50! The baby carrots it came with were strangely undercooked, so they were between raw and steamed. The sauce drizzled inbetween was strange and I have no idea what it was. The heirloom tomatoes were gritty and flavorless. I would not recommend this place- way too much money for below average quality. The garden is beautiful, so coming for just a drink with friends might be ok, but I am not sure it's worth putting up with the bad service and difficult parking. Most likely, I will not come back. 7. Poor Service
Too much credit for too much money. We arrived at 7:30 (had a reservation). They were out of wine glasses, so we had to drink our wine out of champagne glasses. They presented the orders incorrectly, twice, the waiter disappeared, the scallops were tasteless, the waiter poured wine on our feet because he missed the glasses. No wonder we had not returned in many years. Again, too much money for too little service and taste. (BClark38, 09/06/2008)

  8. Wonderful food and atomsphere
A friend and I went for restaurant week on 8/17/2008 for the first time. My girlfriend and I did not know what to expect as we had gone to a higher end restaurant the previous night. We were pleasantly surprised. This tiny, little hidden bistro was fantastic! Complimentary valet parking, great service, the food was delicious and the atomosphere was amazing. There was also live jazz music and singing. I had the flat iron steak and the black bean chili and it was delicious. The steak was cooked to perfection! The steak was served with this fried cheese and bacon and potato filled mini burritos (can't think of the proper name for them!) but they were yummy! The wait staff was attentive and answered all of our questions, he even suggested the perfect wine to accompany our meal. This place would make a wonderful romantic date location. I will definately patronize this place over and over (Customer1273, 08/18/2008)

  9. Used to be good...not anymore
When I moved to Houston 6+ years ago The Daily Review was a gem and a great find. We took anyone who came to visit to this restaurant for either brunch or dinner. A few years ago we noticed a significant change in the quality of food. We stopped going after way too many bad meals. Recently we decided to give it one more try. Maybe new ownership? or new management?? One can at least hope. But alas it seems to have gotten even worse. Eggs Benedict couldn't even be made correctly. One egg was perfect, the second "hard boiled." My simple breakfast of eggs and biscuit was inedible. The waiter didn't seem concerned or even want to be bothered by our problems. I mourn the loss of my most favorite restaurant and wish it would return to its former glory. (kaybeeTX, 08/17/2008)

  11. Reception Success
I had to plan a farewell slash reception party in a very short time. I was very nervous about booking a place, catering etc. A friend of mine suggested I have our party in a restaurant. So, I looked around for those with a banquet room and open date. My husband and I chose the Review after visiting it once. Our party turned out to be a huge success due in large part to the restaurants' staff and food. Lee and Richard were both exptremely helpful and even comforting about my nerves. However, the food was the biggest treat. We chose our own menu, which included a chicken, beef and salmon plate. I had the chicken and it was great. My husband had the beef and said it was cooked to perfection. This means a lot, considering my husband is Brazilian and used to eating a lot of good, well-cooked beef. My mother had the salmon and she too was extremely pleased. Luckily, everyone else I asked was just as happy with their food. Finally, the waitstaff was wonderful. They were catering, polite and very professional. They were even patient and kind to the half dozen kids in attendance. Honestly, it was a fabulous night. I would recommend this place not just for a brief meal but for a celebration in the Green Room. They do not disappoint. (brmx, 07/22/2008)

  12. Greasy and salty food
My friend and I went to this place as we drove by and noticed the patio. I was enchanted. Walked in and VERY quickly were helped to be sited. Almost as if the servers were fighting for customers. ? Not a good impression. The patio was not clean. It looked much better from the outside. THAT BAD. It took FOR EVER to get our cocktails... yet, it?s alright cus in other places it takes a while too. The food...poor! Big deception. Either too salty, too greasy, too unappealing. Keep the unclean patio for yourselves... and the poor food. We are not coming back. (lovegooditalianfood, 07/17/2008)

  13. Couldhavedonebetter
We decided to try this restaurant based on recommendations from friends. We had reservations on a Friday evening and when we arrived were seated promptly. The restaurant is gorgeous, a very nice decpr with a romantic patio. Due to the heat, we chose a table inside. Once our guests arrived, we waited 15 minutes before being greeted by waitstaff. I felt this was a little too long as the restaurant was not crowded at all. The service was lackluster at best. The food was good, but there is not much here that stands out. Our courses were delivered promptly and with good timing, although I do expect the waiter to check back after the food has been delivered to make sure the table is happy. This did not happen once during our meal. One of our guests' steak was not cooked according to his order. However, good food will only go so far if the service is lacking. I never saw a manager or anyone in authority all evening. There seems to be a "whatever" attitude displayed in abundance by employees. We were underwhelmed. I wouldn't say this was a bad experience, but with all the restaurants to choose from in the area.......................you can definitely do better. Keep looking, there is not much here. 14. not just for lunch
I invite clients to meet me at the Daily Review for lunch quite often, but last week my husband took me there for dinner on Mother's Day. Perhaps because the restaurant was almost full inside and out, the service was a little slow but still attentive without being obtrusive and both my mahi mahi and my husband's steak were cooked perfectly. But I could not believe the difference in the atmosphere. Both the dining room and patio looked very romantic, with candles and low lighting and there was a great jazz duo on the porch. Although we ate in the dining room (no reservations) we were able to move outside for drinks after dinner and enjoy the music. It was a very pleasurable evening and we plan to go back soon. 16. All around phenomenal evening!
A group of 10 that grew into 16 attended a birthday event here and everything was impeccable -- seating, service and, of course, sustenance. The $4 martinis were delicious and everyone was satisfied with their food. The mashed potatoes and the chocolate whiskey brownie were hits all the way around the table. The patio was perfect for such a large, boisterous group. Our server was on time and, frequently, ahead of the game. Overall, way to go! (annehoffman1, 04/18/2008)

  17. Used to be a great little gem! Not so anymore...
On a recent visit, we had a reservation (2 of us), and were seated immediately. We waited TWENTY minutes before anyone even came over to offer us water! We finally had to get up, go to the bar, and ask for menus. The food was decent, when it finally came, but I was so annoyed by then it ruined my appetite. 18. bad service, bad food
The restaurant has a nice atmosphere but it's a shame that the food and service is so bad. There were six of us and our orders took forever to arrive and when they finally did come they were not only cold, but they were wrong! It took another 25 minutes to get the correct orders and when they came, they were still not what we had asked for. When we asked for the manager, he was rude and unprofessional and we did not even get an apology for anything. It was one of the worst experiences we've ever had at a restaurant and we are never be going back. (emmathomas, 12/16/2007)

  19. Not so great.....average.
I ate at the Daily Review this pas weekend as well. Overall this place average. Let me start off with the pros. The restaurant/cafe is very pleasing to the eyes at night with all the lighting. The weather was perfect when I went, so I sat outside with my friends. The service was adequate, not too over bearing but not lacking in service. My mash potatoes were good. The cat roaming around was cute. Cons: I was not impressed by most of my dinner. My entire dinner was bland and unmemorable. I had the "tortilla crusted shrimp" for appetizers.....over cooked with a charring taste to it. Main entree: Pork chops.....no taste, no seasoning, greasy. I would say this place is over-priced for the quality and quantity of the food. The cat roamming around - Im an animal lover but not sure if a cat jumping on the tables or just roamming around would fair well with customers that are allerigic to cats or just dont like cats. Conclusion: When picking out my choices for dinner I went for someting mainstream. Being that said, I was baffled by the bland, nonmemorable food I had. The ambience and outdoor sitting is a definate plus. I dont think I would go back for dinner. For a glass of wine with friends outside....probably. (del102, 11/14/2007)

  20. What has happened here??
I revisited DRC last Friday and had a most awful experience from start to finish. We were seated 20 minutes before water or cocktails were served (and my martini was cool, not cold). Another waiter and 30 minutes went by before our order was placed. My tortilla crusted shrimp was a tad over cooked, but still good, and the salads were nice as well, but our empty plates (and water glasses) sat there for another 30 minutes. The manager and three waiters were standing in the corner talking, never bothering to check on us or respond to my hand signals. I finally removed the plates myself and naturally that got their attention. The manager, Susan, was very defensive and said they were very busy yet there were several empty tables. She did not apologize, and when I pointed that out, she said the meal would be on the house which we were all grateful for. But alas, things did not improve. My medium rare steak came out well done! And a cafe latte arrived without milk. Both were replaced but at this point in the evening we are over it!! I am not sure what has changed at DRC, but it is not for the good, and we will not be returning. (robashelt, 10/08/2007)

  21. Are You Kidding Me?
How could the Daily Review keep getting good reviews? First of all, the place is crawling with cucarachas! I wouldn't even order a cup of coffee, especially a cappucino, that's where the creepy crawlies hang out. As for wine list? Theirs is totally amateur! The food is at best mediocre. Sure the tortila shrimp sounds appetizing, but it's nothing but greasy and bland! The patio may be attractive, but don't be fooled, it just invites more outdoor life into the building. That place is totally disgusting! (pepsching, 09/14/2007)

  23. BEST BRUNCH IN HOUSTON!
As the Concierge of an upscale boutique hotel in Downtown Houston you tend to eat at a lot of restaurants. I came across this jewel by a guest of mine, and happen to go for Sunday Brunch. As I entered something was different about the place, they had an enormous garden in the back of the restaurant which was amazing. There outside patio is gorgeous and something that should not be missed when the weather is just right! Greg our waiter was superb. I tried there Chicken Pie, which was to die for! I had some other guests with me that got the Breakfast Tostado, it was amazing. We also had the Chicken Enchiladas which was a treat because most places cover it with cheese but this had a good balance. They have great atmosphere and a very cool theme inside the restaurant. I really liked what they have done with the restaurant. Overall, I believe Daily Review combines excellent food and impeccable customer service (magnoliaconcierge, 04/08/2007)

  24. A menu to satisy all with a fabulous patio
Great menu and quality. Although, I don't recommend the mexican dishes. The cheeses they choose, I feel are not in sync with the cuisine. Ask for a seat on the patio. The garden surrounding the patio is refreshing and the tables are spaciously arranged. It's not stuffy like most patios. At night, they set out candles, and have hanging lights offering a cozy, romantic atmosphere. The desserts are made in house and are delicious, and presented nicely. The wine list offers a nice selection, with most bottles below $50.00. That's pretty rare, especially in the River Oaks area. If you have a complaint, however, please don't rush to tell the owner. Tell the manager and she will take care of you. This is a nice, cozy, restaurant that will surely satisfy you and impress others! (marcy_76, 04/06/2007)

  25. One of Houston's secluded gems! Pray it doesn't become townhomes
Daily Review Cafe is one of Houston's most reliably wonderful restaurants. The rear garden is like eating in someone's backyard. The food is always superb and the service (while spotty at times) is usually terrific. If you do have a problem, ask to see Janice Beeson (the owner) or Alfredo (the manager). You haven't lived until you've had the fried chicken or the chicken potpie. What's even better is to go for a late, leisurely lunch--say 1PM, sit in the garden and just enjoy life. What a joy to visit this establishment for the first time with my new bride. We dined outdoors shaded by an umbrella, surrounded by lush flowers and graceful trees swaying in the cool air. We started with beautiful fresh fruits, then she had the Challah Bread French Toast while I had the Baseball Sirloin. Both were delicious. My wife commented that the egg-rich challah was akin to what she grew up with as a chld in New York. I really enjoyed dining here on a Friday evening in the garden. The waiter kindly brought us a citronella stick to repel the mosquitos. 40. Great Reward
This is a great place to take a work group you want to reward...just plan some extra time. The food is wonderful...especially the Baked Goat Cheese Salad. The ambience makes the team feel special! (skrazo, 07/06/2003)

  41. $$$$ for C+ food & C- service
Food was ok, but outrageously expensive for . A small to avg size bowl of "Tortilla soup" (tomato soup with 2 bite size pieces of chicken) $6. Small dish of ice cream $6.50. Plain chicken sandwich on bread with chips $9. Servers were rather snooty and very kid UNfriendly. Could eat at twice at other better area restauarants for the same amount of money. On the plus side they have a VERY nice outside courtyard with nice garden and fountain. (wbmarino, 05/25/2003)

  42. Inconsistency...
I've been to this eatery 2-3 times and have always had great service and good food. However, I went there this Valentine's Day and the food was mediocre and service was inconsistent and not up to par as the usual service on a busy Friday night. I was surprised at the prices of a 3 course dinner to be $50? I got a bowl of mushroom soup (yum), a 6 oz filet mignon and creme brulee. I didn't think that meal was worth $50 a person, and portions were pretty small! I guess we can blame this one on Hallmark Holidays for bringing us Valentines Day. Otherwise, the Sunday Brunch is wonderful and the ambience of the place (pretty patio and garden) is great on NICE day (sit outside)...just avoid this place for the holidays! (palapakini, 02/16/2003)

  43. All Around Fantastic
I finally tried Daily Review after hearing so many good things about it and everything was great. The warm spinach salad was delicious, as well as the seared ahi tuna with wasabi mashed potatoes. I highly recommend the chocolate whisky pot de creme for dessert. the staff was very polite and helpful as well. Great! (Natashya, 02/06/2003)

  44. Mediocre food; Lousy service
I ordered salmon, and it was inedible. I tried, but it was unfresh and overcooked. I took a few bites and then called the waitress over to explain that the fish was inedible. She looked shocked, and then rudely took it away with no apologies, as if the restaurant couldn't possibly serve a bad meal. This was the second bad experience here, and it was the last time I'll go. 45. take your time
The hostess graciously offered to seat me at a four top despite a crowd on the patio. The seared tuna offered an outstanding presentation. The waiter was very knowledgeable and allowed me to enjoy a good read during a protracted dinner. Excellent value. (sirdaniel, 09/12/2002)

  46. It was OK
So, we finally went after the great reviews from friends and it was OK. The crab cake still had too much filler, but this is texas. The snapper was wonderful but it came with root veggies and a heavy sauce. Its summer! I think this restaurant may be nicer in the winter for a little comfort food. Also, if you sit inside, be prepared to share conversation with your neighbors as it is a little tight. (jessintexas, 08/28/2002)

  48. Charming patio
This is the best outdoor dining I have experienced, can't wait for cooler weather to enjoy to the fullest! Staff is attentive and, of course, the food is excellent! The new gardens are attractive and you'd never know you are in the middle of a bustling city. (matsbert, 07/23/2002)

  49. Typical Houston Horrible Service
This was the 4th consecutive time I have enjoyed satisfactory food with horrible service. I have tried slow nights and most recently a Friday night with 3 different waiters/waitresses. It is ashame because it takes away from the consistently good food and wonderful outdoor ambience. Furthermore, do not bother making reservations because even if you do, they will seat people without them in your seat and make you wait. (Nevereatathome, 07/08/2002)

  50. Wonderul
I completely disagree with the poor ratings that The Daily Review Cafe has gotten. I love that place. My boyfriend and I frequent the Daily Reiew. We have always had very friendly and helpful waiters/waitresses and the food has always been wonderful no matter which meal you get there. The value of the service and food are tremendous for the small price that you pay. Go have brunch there one Saturday afternoon and your opinion may change, for those of you who didn't have a pleasurable experience!! (arowland, 06/19/2002)

  51. Worth Another Try?
After hearing about this place for a while now, we finally tried it. The patio was great, the staff was friendly, but not the most professional....but, in the end we really like the laid back atmosphere. We like the menu, but weren't "thrilled" with the food. The food didn't seem to live up to the reviews....I've had better meals for $100 per couple in Houston. Liked it, Yes. Loved it....not sure yet, but it's worth another try. (Heightsguy, 06/07/2002)

  52. Bad food for the young.
The Cafe might be a nice place for college-age customers to hang out, but the food arises from a crude conception and worst execution. The ambiance is casual, and the waiters and staff are young. The waiters were very nice, and the ambiance was enjoyable. The food, however, is what college students on a budget would put together. It was a mish-mash of cheap cheese and unseasoned vegetables combined without any notion of symmetry and balance. The fruit salad was warm, and the white wine was not adequately chilled. For $50 dollars, the 2 of us left hungry and shocked by the bad quality of the food. (johnadani, 05/26/2002)

  53. NEW Patio is GREAT
Ive been coming to the DRC for awhile now, and was really curious to see how the food and style would change when the new management took over. I can sincerly say that it is better than before and there have been positive changes both inside and outside the kitchen. I LOVE that the garden area has been better utilized with a beautiful brick patio that looks to double or triple the number of seats you can get outside (even if its 100 degrees, outside is the place to be). Oh yeah, dont forget to try the Apple Crisp! (terrapin, 05/24/2002)
